My Story, Your Guide

Amy Burton, BPsych (Hons)

Pediatric Behavior Specialist

For many years I was a Social Worker (and had other similar roles) in state schools, the foster care system and early intervention programs. I loved helping transform the behavior and lives of children and families at the extreme end of the behavior spectrum. But today my heart belongs to the forgotten majority of families who aren't supported by the system.

Professional Experience

I've worked with hundreds of families from dozens of cultural backgrounds - plus helped numerous teachers and allied health professionals - to manage children's challenging behaviors even when extreme and entrenched.

Personal Experience

I've fostered 20 children towards reunification in two states and am a proud solo parent to my own 5 children. After having an only child for nearly nine years then birthing 2 sets of boy/girl twins in two years, I've personally experienced a wide variety of family sizes, age gaps, and developmental challenges.

What's a Freestyle Parent?

Whenever there's no existing label for a category, I'm forced to invent a new one ... So freestyle parents are smart critical thinkers who recognize that no single parenting 'style' is the 'best' for every family.

Freestyle parents are focused on tangible practicalities like: 'What are our options?', 'What risks are involved?', and 'What's the best solution for our unique family?'

Are you really teaching 'all' of the behavior modification techniques available?

No. I don't teach methods I believe are at high risk of misuse or methods that should be reserved for trained professionals who have proper credentials.

How many different behavior management techniques do you explain?

188. Of these, 150 are more powerful than reward, and 168 are more powerful than punishments like 'time in' and 'time out'.

It's much less overwhelming than it sounds. My 'periodic table' of behavior remedies is laid out so clearly and intuitively, you'll soon learn to skip directly to what you need.

Can I just describe our current problem and have you tell me what to do?

Yes ... But I'd rather give you a menu of safe and effective options so you can make a free and informed choice about what's best for your family.

That way, you'll be able to reuse my reference guide - and the blueprint it comes with - to quickly and easily resolve future behavior challenges.

Besides, if you don't have informed choice, you're not free. Don't be in a hurry to let artificial intelligence or other people dictate how you manage your children.

Do you have any final words of encouragement?
